Driver CPC — info & FAQs

What Driver CPC is, how initial qualification works, periodic 35-hour training, and how it differs from your HGV licence.

7 min read

Driver CPC is the professional qualification for lorry and bus drivers. It sits alongside your vocational licence — getting Category C or C+E is not the whole story if you drive for a living.

FAQs

What is Driver CPC?

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence shows you meet professional standards for driving lorries or buses. Most paid driving jobs require a valid Driver CPC.

How do I get Driver CPC for the first time?

New professional drivers complete initial qualification modules (theory, case studies, practical driving, and a practical demonstration — often called Modules 1–4). Your training provider will map the exact route for HGV or PCV.

What is periodic CPC training?

Once qualified, you must complete 35 hours of approved periodic training every five years to keep your Driver CPC valid. Training is usually delivered in 7-hour blocks by approved centres.

Is Driver CPC the same as Operator CPC?

No. Driver CPC is for drivers. Operator CPC (Transport Manager CPC) is a separate qualification for people who manage an operator’s licence / compliance in a haulage or passenger business.

Can I do CPC with the same school as my HGV course?

Often yes — many centres offer licence training and CPC modules. Compare what’s bundled in the price, then book direct with the school.
