Thinking about becoming an HGV (or LGV) driver? These are the questions trainees ask us most often. Rules and fees change, so always confirm details with your training centre and GOV.UK — then book the school direct.

FAQs

What is the difference between HGV and LGV?

There is no practical difference for most people. HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) is the older everyday term; LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) is the newer official wording. Training centres and job ads still say “HGV” all the time.

What do I need to become HGV qualified?

You need a full car driving licence (category B), and you must normally be at least 18 (some pathways and vehicle types have different age rules). To drive professionally you also need the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC).

What do I need to start HGV training?

Apply for a provisional HGV (or bus) licence after a medical. Then complete the Driver CPC modules / tests that apply to your path, take practical training with a reputable centre, and pass the practical driving test(s). Professional drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic Driver CPC training every five years, and renew the vocational licence on the DVLA schedule (including more frequent checks from age 65).

How long does HGV training take?

Practical training often takes about 1–2 weeks once you start, but the full journey depends on medical/provisional timing, theory modules, waiting lists, and which licences you already hold.

What does HGV training cost?

Expect a wide range — often roughly £1,500 to £3,000+ depending on category (C vs C+E), what’s included (tests, CPC), location, and waiting times. Always get an itemised quote from the training centre.

Should I use a training broker?

No. Brokers typically add markup and sit between you and the school. Book an established training provider in your area direct — that is what LearnHGV is for.
