There is no difference, they mean the same thing. HGV is the old way of saying "Heavy Goods Vehicle" and LGV is the new way of saying "Large Goods Vehicle".

  • You need a full car driving licence.
  • You must be over 18 - but there are some exceptions.
  • You have to get a professional driving qualification called the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence ( CPC )
  1. Firstly you need to apply for a provisional HGV or bus licence.
  2. Then you have to pass the 5 tests that make up the Driver CPC to qualify.
  3. You will need to take 35 hours of Driver CPC training every 5 years to stay qualified.
  4. You will need to renew your bus or HGV licence every 5 years, and every year when you reach 65.

Typically, training takes 1-2 weeks, but this can vary depending on the course and your schedule. Also depends what licenses you already have.

Costs range from £1,500 to £3,000, depending on the type of vehicle and course provider. IMPORTANT - NEVER use a broker! Their practice is unethical and expensive. Always use an established HGV training company in their area.
